Topic discussed: Greetings, introduction, Islamic religion
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I first saw on my conversation partner e-mail that Amal spoke Arabic. I thought that was interesting since I had not yet had a female conversation partner that spoke Arabic. Amal too looked different than other female Arabic speakers, especially Saudi Arabians - she did not wear a Hijab or cover her head. She was a really great English speaker - in level 4. She talked to me about how she lived in the US for 6 years as a child when her father was getting his education. She has 3 older sisters and 3 younger brothers. Her mother is more conservative and traditional than her father and also does not know that she is not covering herself like Saudi Arabian customs. She explicitly made a difference between her religion and Saudi Arabian culture - in which she believes that it's only Saudi Arabian culture - not religion - that causes women to cover their heads and sometimes faces.
Amal currently lives with her father, very close to my street on West Pensacola. Her father wants her to make new friends so she really wants to hang out with me at other times. She liked learning new, intricate words so I taught her some in my speech: like ostracize and pivotal. She wants me to use "large" words so she can expand her vocabulary.
