Mary Phillips CP #6

Date/time: Thursday, December 10, 2015, 2:00-3:00
Location: Catalina Cafe

Topic discussed: We actually talked a little bit about politics this time.  Since this was our last session I was reasonably sure we had similar political beliefs and I wasn't going to wildly offend him or anything.  We talked about Donald Trump and the upcoming presidential elections.  We also talked about how relative the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are depending on the country.

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:  We both knew a little bit about the United Kingdom political system so we were able to use that as a reference point.  He explained how some candidates that would be called liberal in the United States are much further right on the political spectrum than, for instance, the Labour Party in the UK.  We talked about what a contentious issue gun control is, as well.  I explained how much power lobby groups like the NRA have in American politics.  Obviously, political beliefs are much more personal and subjective than other aspects of American culture so we more learned about each other than our respective cultures.
