Mary Phillips TS #12

Date/time: December 7, 2015 2:00-3:00
Location: Public library
Topic/skill: Reported speech, gerunds and infinitives

Feedback provided to tutee: There were a couple questions she had that I have to do more research on.  For instance, the question of why people use a definite article when it seems like they are talking about something in the general sense came up.  Like when people say, "I need to go to the market" or "I went to the doctor's" instead of "I need to go to a market" or "I went to a doctor's office".  The best I could guess was that the speaker, even though they haven't previously referenced a specific market, was speaking as if their audience knew which market they were referring to.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: There were a couple questions asked in this session that I wasn't entirely sure how to answer.  The question of indefinite versus definite articles that I mentioned above was one of them.  I, of course, wanted to guess at an answer but I realized that would be counterproductive if I got it wrong and had to ask her to forget what I had said.
