Mary Phillips TS #11

Date/time: December 7, 2015 3:30-4:30
Location: Public library
Topic/skill: Antonyms

Feedback provided to tutee: Like in previous sessions, if she got an answer wrong I usually asked her if she was sure and then reread the question and added some more background/clues.  When I did this she usually was able to guess the correct answer.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: We got a little off-track and started doing an activity with graphs.  I was only semi-successful in getting us refocused on English.  At the very least, the graph activity forced her to do word problems and read.  The activity showed the graphs in the context of an ongoing story about robots.  However, it wasn't exactly an ideal activity but it was what she was interested in doing.  I'm never sure how strict I should be exactly with regards to discipline and time management.  We did do a worksheet about antonyms that went very well.  The trouble with some of the games is that they focus on the "game" part more than the learning part.  I always have to play through whatever games I'm going to use beforehand to make sure they're not especially difficult to play, not because of the English component, but because of the video game component.
