Arzu met me at my office today and we talked more about the holidays and life in general before moving into further study of her speech sample. Arzu was able to correct every mistake on her own as she read through the transcript. It is important to note that I had not marked the transcript for correction so she also discovered the errors independently. The main patterns she discovered were a lack of articles and an overuse of the phrase "you know" as a space filler.
Wrapping up the session, we talked about what we would like to do with our TEFL certificates. Arzu would love to use her training to teach here in the US but believes schools would much prefer to hire a native speaker. She is primarily interested in continuing to develop personally and to continue to challenge herself. Someday, she may teach English to students in Turkey.
In the coming weeks, Arzu has offered to teach some of us Turkish! It is time to reverse the roles....
