Feedback provided to tutee: Since the session is over and Abdullatif no longer has homework, I created our own agenda for today. I brought an FSU newspaper and asked Abdullatif to choose two articles that we could read together. We read one article about the FSU girls soccer team and one about the Arabic Outreach Program at FSU. We actually both learned a lot while reading the paper. I think this was a great culture lesson. We also underlined new vocabulary and I described them through context and then by providing definitions. Overall, I want to encouraged Abdullatif to practice reading English on his own.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that lessons are far more fun when you include culture and the tuttee's interests. We talked about Arabic culture, politics, and sports. I also learned about Abdullatif's perspective, which was interesting!

Topic/Skill: Grammar homework, review for final exams
Feedback provided to tutee: I haven't seen Abdullatif in a few weeks due to our busy schedules. It was nice to meet with him and help him with his grammar homework. We reviewed his sentence structure and studied for his final exams.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that Abdullatif is not afraid to speak and practice English, but he struggles with grammar rules. Once again, practice is key. While talking, I also learned that he loves soccer and most other sports. I'm going to try and incorporate his interests and hobbies into our next lesson.

Topic/Skill: Homework, High Frequency Words (Vocabulary)
Feedback provided to tutee: Today I helped Astin with his homework, which mainly consisted of practicing writing and learning new high frequency words. I encouraged him to write the letters at least eight times each.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I''m still learning how to teach the importance of repetition. Encouragement, backwash, and a positive attitude are key. I'm also continuing to learn more about Astin and his culture. He talks about how excited he is to visit family in Korea. His favorite food is Korean fried chicken!

11/30 Place: Skype Feedback provided to Tutor: Well we had a good session. Of course we went over the differences between Korean Thanksgiving and the U.S. version. Dojun had never eaten turkey which I didn't find too surprising. I had to send him a few pics of turkeys since he'd never seen one. It was really interesting to learn about the foods that Koreans eat at Thanksgiving it made me want to have a Korean thanksgiving dinner.

Date: 11/23 Place: PJ's house Feedback given to Teacher: Good session with PJ. We went over his reading and worked on some basic biology vocabulary. He seemed a little tired in the evening but we got through it. After we finished the vocabulary we then talked a little bit. PJ was surprised to hear that I was learning french and that I was going to start learning Japanese. He said I should learn Korean so maybe I'll start that up haha.

Tonight, we talked about how we spent the Thanksgiving holiday and then shifted direction to a more academic focus. Arzu recorded 5 minutes of speaking about Turkish holidays. We listed to it together afterwards and she corrected some of her own mistakes. I will type the transcript this evening and we will go over the written version in more detail for error correction during our next session. Already, though, she noticed two of her patterns: leaving out articles, and mixing up countable vs uncountable nouns.

Arzu describes herself as a perfectionist and said it is difficult to forgive herself when she catches her mistakes. We talked about having patience with ourselves while learning our second languages and how difficult that has been for us both. It is nice to be able to sympathize and to share our experiences. I think we both left the session more confident and reassured in our language acquisition journeys.

Topic/Skill: Speech/ Math Homework

Feedback:

During this session, P.J. and I went over a speech he has to do in front of all of the fourth graders in his school. First we read through his speech. Then, we corrected some of his grammar. He was reluctant about it at first, then I explained why it needed to be changed and he accepted it. Then we read over his speech again. 

To give him a break, we worked on his math homework. He is really good at multiplication and division. This particular assignment was for long division. We came up with an acronym to help him remember the steps: dmsb. It stands for division, multiplication, subtraction, and bring down. We finished the homework assignment together and I reviewed the problems that he had already completed. He hadn't shown his work on two of the problems so he went back to them and finished them.

Finally, we read through his speech one more time. He read it very well and seemed comfortable with it.
