Topic discussed: Plans after TEFL program

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I learned that Victoria has changed some of her post-TEFL plans. She still would like to go to Turkey for summer but after that she would like to go to South Korea for 1 year. After S. Korea, she also wants to go to France if she can manage it. She also shared with me her London memories and it was very interesting to see how she can speak with British accent.

We also talked a little about Thanksgiving. Victoria will be with her grandmother during Thanksgiving holiday, and they will go to the circus in Orlando.

Topic discussed: Teaching in Istanbul

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Victoria is planning to join a summer camp program in Turkey. Thus, we talked about many aspects of living in Istanbul.  She mentioned that she really would like to see the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar which are fantastic places to visit. She is very motivated about teaching English especially to the kids. I believe, she would be a terrific teacher and spend great time in Istanbul.

During this session, DoJun and I spoke about the Thanksgiving holiday and the different types of food we eat. I learned that the Korean Thanksgiving occurred 2 months ago. We also spoke about Costco. There are 3 in Korea and when DoJun came to the US- specifically in Seattle he attempted to go to a Costco but didn't realize he needed a Costco card. He was able to borrow one and shop there. He doesn't normally shop in Costco in Korea because it is too far away. We spoke about his commute to work and the best ways to travel around Seoul. 

DoJun speaks very well he just needs more practice to speak at a native level. I can see his brain working to try and express himself quickly when we are having a conversation. When this happens he tends to forget the simple aspects of grammar in speech. He tends to forget  to use his articles, countable nouns, and plurals in the correct way. The most notable are the articles. For our sessions, I tend to pick out the most often occurring errors so that he picks up on him. He has greatly improved from our first session. When he gets excited about something we are talking about, and doesn't focus on the grammar, he seems to do better.

This time we played soccer on the fields on campus at FSU and discussed our favorite football (soccer) teams from our home countries and around the world as well as our favorite players. We talked about what it's like to play club football in each of our countries and how we wish we could have been good enough to play professionally.

We discussed complex academic vocabulary such as disproportionate and discussed various negative and positive stereotypes of our home cultures. He also asked me to help explain a couple slang words and idioms such as, "cut me some slack," and "slacking off." He is from Saudi Arabia so we discussed some of the biggest cultural differences between our two countries and also the similarities; we both love to have bonfires.

We watched a short news video about forced labor and labor exportation in North Korea from the Youtube series, Test Tube News, and discussed the ideas. We practiced listening comprehension and speaking  skills. We discussed South Korean's general perceptions of North Korea and separately of North Koreans that immigrate to South Korea seeking a better life. We also discussed the difference between integration and assimilation in between cultures.

This session their mother requested that I review the grammar that they'd been learning in school. They told me they were recently taught about proper nouns and so I reviewed the definition of proper nouns and how they're different from common nouns. They each wrote 10 example sentences using different proper nouns and we corrected them together. They did not make capitalization errors like the past weeks. Great progress in that area.
