11/2 G4 Grammar at 9am
Topic: Phrasal Verbs & Past Modals
Teacher Presentation: The teacher presented a short introduction of new phrasal verbs at the beginning of class and reviewed the phrasal verbs learned last week after which the class participated in a small group activity. Next, she introduced the past modals "used to" and "would" and again had the class practice in small groups. The session ended with a writing practice that the students handed in for evaluation.
Classroom Management: The teacher walked around during group activities to monitor participation. The topic of dating customs was very interesting to the students who had a lot to say about the topic but the teacher had to remind them several times to focus on the practice of the phrasal verbs & past modals within their discussions.
Materials: Solo cups filled with phrasal verbs, chart of changing N American dating customs, white board
Student Participation:
Group activity #1: Each group received a solo cup containing all of the phrasal verbs covered last week and this morning. The students passed the cups around, drawing a phrasal verb from the cup. The first student started a story line using their chosen phrasal verb then the next student added to the storyline with their phrasal verb and so on. The students passed the cup around until all of the slips of paper were used.
Group activity #2: Each group received a chart demonstrating changes in N American dating customs over the past 60 years. The students were asked to practice using past modals to construct sentences about these changes then use the same structure to describe changes in the dating or marriage customs in their home countries. The students showed a lot of interest in this topic.
Feedback Provided: The teacher took notes while overseeing group activities. At times, she corrected pronunciation in the moment. At the end of class, she approached a couple of students to offer feedback on grammar errors she had observed during class.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: After the activity focused on phrasal verbs, the teacher told the class to expect a quiz on Friday. She did not provide a list of the verbs they had studied but instead suggested that students should refer to their in-class notes for review. It was a great example of handing over responsibility for learning to the students.
