Nicole TS#4

Date/Time: 11/6 at 5:30pm via Skype

This evening, I met Jun-suk in South Korea via Skype. He told me that he is working with several tutors and is enjoying learning English. He goes to school from 8:30am until about 3pm then has English school from 4-7pm during the week. On weekends, he has a few tutoring sessions and then is able to relax. He told me he loves to play Jet Pack Joy Ride and Minecraft.

Jun lived in the USA for 5 years and misses the friends he made here. We talked about slumber parties and he said his favorite part about going over to friends' homes here in the US was eating "tons, and tons, and tons of ice cream!!!"

Jun's goal for our time together is to work on his speaking so I plan to come up with a different topic to discuss each session. To prepare for our next meeting, I asked him to plan to tell me about his favorite book. He is going to present the characters, plot, and his opinion of Holes next week and I am excited to find out if he will convince me to read the book or not.

Jun was energetic and excited to set our next meeting. I learned quickly that it is difficult to hold a child's attention via Skype and imagine that it's not much different face-to-face. This session reinforced the idea that it is important to keep the lesson interesting and engaging...especially when the student can disappear from the screen or distract himself with emoticons when he is bored :)
