Feedback provided to tutee: Today Astin and I worked on recognizing and creating patterns. Throughout the speaking and writing activity, I encouraged him to be creative. We also practiced writing upper-case and lower-case letters.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Sometimes Astin is frustrated when we're reviewing something he already learned once in school. I remind him that repetition and practice is very important. To make doing his homework more fun, I'll challenge him to beat the clock or even create his own guidelines. For example, today I asked Astin if he wanted to write the letter "m" 3, 5 or 10 times and he replied with 11! I think allowing some flexibility in the classroom (or at least within tutoring sessions) can help create a positive learning environment.
