Topic/Skill: local issues discussed to practice vocabulary building and conversational fluency
Session: Because Arzu's stated goals were to build her vocabulary and increase her confidence in conversation outside of the context of home and work, I brought a copy of the Tallahassee Democrat with the goal of discussing local issues. She chose an article about a gentleman teaching chess to disadvantaged kids in the community and read it aloud. She used intensive reading practices and we covered unfamiliar vocabulary along the way. She was comfortable with the grammar structures and I was able to correct small pronunciation issues as they arose. At the end, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of intensive reading. During our next session, she will practice top-down reading and we will discuss the differences together. For "homework," she will read today's chosen article once more and write a 3 sentence summary that we will review together on Thursday.
Lesson about tutoring I learned: After our meeting, I had some feedback for myself. I think it would have been beneficial to Arzu had I outlined the differences between intensive and top-down reading methods at the beginning of our session rather than discussing this mid-way. I saw very clearly how planning for a tutoring session is very similar to creating lesson plans for a larger class and will be more prepared next time because of this.
