Date/Time: 11/16/15 5:00-6:00 pm
Location: Astin's Home
Topic/Skill: Tracing and writing letters, creating sentences, homework
Feedback provided to tutee: Today I helped Astin finish his homework for school, which involved tracing and writing letters and numbers. I created additional lines for practice. Astin often writes his letters and numbers backwards, but I encouraged him to keep practicing.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I'm continuing to learn patience throughout my tutoring sessions. I'm also learning that it's important to keep the tutee engaged and interested in the topic. Homework can be boring or fun depending on the context. I also offer "rewards" when Astin finishes an assignment. For example, I'll sing a short song with him (which encourages speaking and proper pronunciation) or let him draw me a picture based on a word or phrase. Positive feedback (backwash) is incredibly important.
