Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:
This week Will joined Arzu and I’s conversation partner meeting. We discussed a sacrificial holiday that is coming up in Turkey. During this holiday, families sacrifice cows or lambs and then have a feast with the sacrifice. This tradition goes back to a story about a family, whose father was going to sacrifice one of his children. The gods spoke to him and told him that he could sacrifice an animal in place of his son. This holiday still sacrifices the animals and it has also become a chance to help those in need. The young visit the old and families get together to share in this huge feast.
We also discussed the political scene of Turkey. There are many democratic people in her country but there are also many conservative areas. These people are thought of as very religious and close minded. There is a scale of religiosity in Turkey, and religion is not mandatory.
