Today, Dojun told me about a night out on the town with a dear friend from high school. He said they hadn't seen each other in months and it was great to catch up though he stayed out way too late and had a hangover at work the next day. He told me that, in Korean culture, it is not uncommon to have a boss who enjoys drinking quite a bit. When you have this kind of boss, it is expected that you will go out and drink with him which sometimes means you don't go to bed until 3am but are still expected to show up for work on time the next morning! He summed up the experience of having a boss like this in just one word: nightmare. We talked about common hangover remedies in Korea, the US, and Ecuador and he told me that most of his co-workers swear by a small bottle of "hangover cure" sold in most drugstores and markets. For him, a hot soup the next morning is a sure fix.
We also talked about our weekend plans, social media, and common ways to chat, text, or stay in touch with friends internationally. Dojun lost touch with another friend of his from high school, but he and his pal looked up the long-lost friend on LinkedIn, found out he is now living in New York, and hope to get into contact with him soon. It's amazing what technology will allow us to do these days! When we meet again on Wednesday, I will be anxious to find out if he was able to contact his friend and what happened when he did.
